New-Tenuta Castello Organic Whole Farro

In the heart of the Po Delta, Tenuta Castello produces quality, organic grain-based products. This month we have added Tenuta Castello whole farro to our product list. This farro is produced organically and packed simply husked and unpolished in order to maximize its flavor and nutritional value. Whole farro has a wheat berry consistency and nutty flavor, and the grain itself accommodates a wide variety of flavors and mediums including salads, soups, and meat dishes. Featured Producer: Principato di Lucedio

The farm “Principato di Lucedio” rises in Trino, near Vercelli in the Piemonte region of northern Italy. It is located at the site of the Abbey of Lucedio where Cistercian monks introduced the cultivation of rice in the 15th century. Over the centuries, ownership of the Abbey was transferred to many different aristocratic families. It even belonged to the brother-in-law of the Emperor Napoleon I for a short time in the early 19th century. In 1937, the property was bought by the Count Paolo Cavalli d’Olivola, the father of the present owner and manager, the Countess Rosetta Clara Cavalli d’Olivola Salvadori di Wiesenhoff.

Today, the Principato di Lucedio estate, set within a national park, boasts 1250 acres of farm land where several varieties of rice are grown including high quality Carnaroli, Vialone Nano, and Arborio. The estate is considered to be one of the finest rice growing estates in Italy. Principato di Lucedio’s exclusive line of hand-selected rice is harvested in September and October, and the rice is stored until orders are received. At that time it is husked and packaged in cloth bags that allow the living rice to breathe.

For a small admission fee, the public can visit the Abbey on Tuesdays thru Sundays from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. For an additional fee, you can add a special flavor to your visit by tasting the wines and foods of the region – including the risotto.
