Diego Bolognani is a brilliant, energetic winemaker from Trentino, not far south of the Austrian border. He makes delicious white wines from a range of grape varieties. His Pinot Grigio is fermented and matured in stainless steel tanks, thus transmitting the flavor of the grapes not a flavor of oak. The wines from the Pinot Grigio grape can be dreadful or superb. Unfortunately, too many of the wines imported to America fall into the dreadful category. This one, however, is a great exception. La Cadalora Pinot Grigio, 2001

The brothers Tomasi produce excellent wines that enhance the qualities of the varietals. Their Pinot Grigio, from Santa Margherita Valagarina, is a straw yellow in color with a nose of wild flowers and mineral notes. It is a dry, soft, round wine with medium acidity and good persistence and intensity. Serve this Pinot with seafood, Parma ham, or as an aperitif. Usually ships in 1 to 2 days.
